When you invest hours, effort, and creativity into a digital project, one question naturally comes up: Is my work really safe?

We often think of security and data protection as the things we can see: a “secure connection” notice or a reassuring lock icon. But the truth is, the most important protections are usually invisible. They work quietly in the background—and those are the ones that really make the difference.

At Genially, protecting the ideas, personal data, and creations of millions of users isn’t something we have to do. It’s a responsibility that’s part of who we are.

In this article, we want to explain—clearly and openly—how our digital protection system works. Here are the 6 pillars of security and data protection at Genially, so you can create with total peace of mind:

    1. Data protection at Genially: proactive security that stays ahead of risks

In cybersecurity, waiting for something to go wrong isn’t a strategy—it’s a major risk. That’s why at Genially, we choose to stay ahead.

External security experts, such as the firm Cacilian, regularly perform controlled penetration tests (pentesting) on our platform. In other words, they try to hack Genially—with our permission—to detect potential vulnerabilities before anyone else does.

This ethical hacking approach allows us to strengthen the platform continuously.

When we identify a potential vulnerability, fixing it becomes a top priority. Our tech team acts immediately to reinforce protection.

For us, transparency and quick action are essential foundations of security.

In short: At Genially, we don’t wait for problems—we go looking for them, so we can solve them long before they become real threats.

    2. SOC 2 Type 2 Certification: a real guarantee of data protection

Not all platforms undergo external audits, and even fewer pass them successfully. Genially does.

Since April 2025, we’ve been SOC 2 Type 2 certified—an internationally recognized gold standard for security and data protection for companies that store, process, or manage data in the cloud.

Image with a black background displaying the message “We’re SOC2 Type 2 certified” in white text. The official SOC 2 certification seal appears in the upper right corner, and the Genially logo is shown at the bottom, highlighting the commitment to data protection at Genially.
📷 Genially has achieved SOC 2 Type 2 certification, a new step toward strengthening security and trust in every experience you create.

    What does this certification mean?
Once a year, an independent auditor thoroughly reviews how we protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of user data.

And the best part: we achieved SOC 2 Type 2 with the highest possible rating. This confirms that our internal security controls are not only well designed but consistently effective in practice. And yes—our team is already preparing for the 2026 audit.

In a nutshell: This isn’t a vague promise. It’s a certified guarantee that your information is truly secure.

    3. Compliance & data protection: your data under the world’s strictest privacy law

Genially is used worldwide, but our headquarters is in Spain. This means all data handling complies with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)—one of the strictest privacy laws in the world.

But we don’t stop at compliance.
All data from our users—whether you log in from Mexico, the United States, or Japan—is stored on servers located in Ireland, within the European Economic Area, and hosted by Amazon Web Services (AWS).

This ensures that your personal and professional information is protected under the strongest privacy framework available.

    In practice, this means:

    • Your data doesn’t leave the EU without the necessary legal safeguards.
    • We comply with international security and privacy standards, including FERPA and COPPA for education.
    • You can create, teach, or present from anywhere in the world while knowing your information meets the highest digital security standards.

    4. Backups & recovery: your work is never lost

We’ve all experienced that moment of panic after accidentally deleting something important. With Genially, that panic lasts only as long as it takes you to open the trash folder.

From there, you can restore your creations for up to 30 days after deletion. Always accessible from your workspace, the trash folder acts as your safety net for everyday mistakes.

Behind this simple feature is an entire infrastructure designed to protect what you create: daily, encrypted, automated backups. This ensures the security and protection of your work and data against any unexpected issue.

As Chema Roldán, CTO and Co-Founder of Genially, put it:

“Everything we do and exchange online is, ultimately, data. At Genially, it’s our responsibility to safeguard and protect it from threats across the web.”

This philosophy captures what security and data protection truly mean to us: taking care of your data is part of our commitment to helping you create with complete confidence and freedom.

    5. Security for you and your audience: malicious link detection

Security doesn’t stop inside the platform—it also protects the people who interact with your creations.

Every link included in a Genially is automatically scanned through Google Web Risk API, the same system Google Chrome uses to detect and block malicious websites.

And we go even further. Our team has developed additional detection and blocking mechanisms to strengthen this protective layer even more.
If a link is flagged as dangerous, it’s disabled inside the creation—ensuring your audience won’t access harmful pages.

This protection not only ensures regulatory compliance, but also reinforces trust between creators and viewers.

    6. Responsible AI & data protection: your content doesn’t train AI

AI is transforming how we create, learn, and share. But it has also raised a legitimate concern:
What happens to the data and content we upload to digital platforms?

At Genially, our stance is clear:

“Genially does not use user data or designs to train AI models—neither our own nor third‑party ones.”

    HELP CENTER

Security and privacy in the use of AI in Genially

This responsible AI policy ensures that your creations—from educational materials to business presentations—are never used for AI training without your consent.

At Genially, intellectual property is sacred. Your creativity belongs to you.
Our commitment to tech ethics is a key part of our overall approach to security: transparency, respect, and full control for every user.

Transparency & trust: a visible commitment

Genially’s approach to security and data protection isn’t just about technology—it’s also about culture.
Every technical or legal decision is guided by a core principle: trust is earned through clarity.

That’s why every user has access to our Trust Center, a space where you can find up‑to‑date information on:

    • Certifications & audits (SOC 2, GDPR)
    • Security reports
    • Encryption and data protection measures
    • Updates to security controls

This level of transparency strengthens our mission: empowering people to create safely, responsibly, and freely.

Security & privacy: the foundation of digital trust

At Genially, security and compliance aren’t just features—they’re the foundation of the entire experience.

Every layer of protection—from pentesting to responsible AI—serves one purpose: protecting your work and your data.

Digital trust is built through actions:

    • External audits & recognized certifications
    • Compliance with the strictest legal frameworks
    • Smart backups & advanced encryption
    • Transparency, ethics & technological responsibility

Security and data protection at Genially are an active commitment to everyone who creates, teaches, and communicates every day.
